OVERVIEW
When crafting prompts, there are two key approaches: longer, detailed prompts and shorter, chained prompts.
1. Longer Prompts: When Context Is King
A longer prompt packs everything into one input—context, instructions, and expected outputs. Think of it as an all-in-one package.
Best Situations for Longer Prompts:
•Static, defined outputs: When you need one-and-done results, like a competency model or sales playbook.
•Comprehensive documents: Drafting reports, customer journey maps, or strategy frameworks.
•Analysis with full context: Summarizing large datasets or conducting SWOT analyses.
Why They Work:
•AI can process the entire picture at once, maintaining continuity and delivering more cohesive results.
•Saves time when the task doesn’t require iteration or adjustments.
How to Improve Results:
•Use delimiters (e.g., """ or ---) to clearly separate context, rules, and instructions.
•Add Markdown headings (like ## Goals or ### Output) to help AI parse (analyze and process) the content.
Example Prompt:
## Task: Create a Competency Model
### Role: Account Executive
- Drive new revenue
- Manage complex sales cycles
### Output:
1. Core competencies
2. Behavioral indicators
3. Organized by skill level
This format keeps the prompt clear and focused, reducing mistakes, when you use markdown it helps the AI have a hierarchy to the structure of the prompt and easier to consume reducing hallucination.
2. Chained Prompts: Step-by-Step Precision
This is the style that I see on Linkedin 90% of the time, usually cuz it’s “easier” but it also takes longer.
When to use Chained Prompts:
•Exploratory work: Refining ICPs (ideal customer profiles) or developing GTM strategies.
•Complex workflows: Multi-step projects, like analyzing sales pipeline velocity or planning campaigns.
•Dynamic tasks: Roleplay scenarios for objection handling or discovery calls.
Why They Work:
•Each step builds logically, allowing for iterative refinement (adjustments based on feedback).
Example Chain:
1.Define the ICP:
Create an ICP for a SaaS company targeting mid-market e-commerce businesses.
2.Identify their buying triggers:
What are 5 key buying triggers for this ICP?
3.Build the value proposition:
Using the ICP and triggers, write a 3-sentence value proposition focused on ROI.
Pro Tip: Start with a longer prompt to create a framework, then use shorter, chained prompts to refine the details.
3. Why Delimiters and Markdown Matter
Tools like ChatGPT handle structured prompts much better. Using delimiters (""") and Markdown (##) helps the AI focus and reduces hallucinations (irrelevant or incorrect outputs). For example:
## Task: Draft a Sales Playbook
### Sections:
1. Prospecting
2. Discovery
3. Objection Handling
### Audience: Sales Teams
These markers act like signposts, guiding the AI to deliver more accurate results.
